Home Energy Savings Case Study




Problem


When it was time to build our dream home, we did not want to settle for the “economy” windows and doors normally included by the builder. We insisted on providing our own windows and doors. The builder gave us a fair credit and agreed to allow us to substitute his regular, builder grade product with an upgrade of our choosing. Our home was to be located in the area of the Hamilton International Airport so there is significant noise from air traffic at certain times of day. That was one concern. Our other concern was that our last custom home in Ancaster had poor quality windows and doors and our heating costs were $200 - $300 per month during the winter months and we could never get the house cool enough in the summer and it cost a fortune.


Solution


The solution to our situation was to have Wardco casement and awning windows installed throughout the home. Casement and awning windows already are the best performing style of window and with Wardco’s thicker extrusion, multipoint locking system and dual bulb seals, we knew we were getting a high performance window. We also selected their foam filled frame option for increased noise reduction and triple pane glass units for sound and added insulating value. For our entry doors, we selected insulated fiberglass doors with multipoint locks and replaced the sliding door with an insulated steel garden door. Instead of fiberglass insulation strips to insulate the perimeter of the door and window openings, we insisted on low expansion insulating foam.


Benefits


Even though this house is larger than our last home (3000 sq. ft. plus walk-out basement), after three years, our heating costs are less than half and our house cools in the summer for a fraction of the cost of our previous home. In addition, the air traffic noise we were concerned about is almost non-existent. In an identical model house built in Ancaster without upgraded windows or doors, comparative heating and cooling costs are 30 – 40% higher than ours! The builder was so impressed that he is now including Wardco windows and doors in all his custom homes!!
